Located on the coast about two-hundred miles north of Brisbane, Bundaberg is an appealing city that has plenty to offer any visitor. Much of the city’s economy is based on sugar cultivation, harvesting and processing. So you will be able to find farm work and fruit picking jobs in Bundaberg, as well as general Bundaberg jobs.

Bundaberg’s unmissable Rum Distillery is one of the highlights of a trip to this location! There’s also plenty of work to be had from the surrounding farms that grow anything from cucumbers to macadamia nuts. If you’re hoping to stop off at a place that combines a vibrant urban environment with some of the best wildlife on the planet, Bundaberg is the place to go.

What to do in Bundaberg

Like any other city, there are plenty of galleries, museums and night life. If you go nowhere else, visit the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery – between November and mid-January you can see the turtles laying their eggs. To watch the turtles hatch, visit between mid-January and March. In addition to some fantastic beaches and a chance to enjoy dolphin and whale watching, many visitors take some time to view the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, which contains planes, memorabilia and much more relating to Bert Hinkler, arguably Australia’s most famous solo flyer.

As you would expect from a reasonably sized city, Bundaberg has a wide range of hotels, guest houses and budget priced accommodation. There are a number of back-packing hostels in and around Bundaberg, including the centrally located Dingo Blue Backpackers Hostel, Federal Backpackers and Big Foot Backpackers.

Where to eat

Oodies Cafe is probably the best-known eatery in the city. Legendary for its breakfasts and friendly ambiance, it’s well worth a visit. The Brewhouse and the Spotted Dog Tavern are also well thought of. Grandma’s Kitchen comes recommended by many for its great food at refreshingly affordable prices.

How to get to Bundaberg

It’s possible to reach Bundaberg by rail or road from Brisbane – a trip of about 200 miles. Bundaberg is about 170 miles from the Sunshine Coast (along Bruce Highway) and around 840 miles south of Cairns. The quickest way to get to Bundaberg from Cairns is to fly.
