Remember, under the Horticulture Award, you must be paid at least the minimum wage for each day you work. If you’re paid by piece rate for a fruit picking role, you should earn at least 15% more than the minimum hourly rate for your classification. Job Description
Looking for a crew of people to pick grapes randomly throughout March, April, May 2025
Locations:
Sorell – 5 days (March)
Richmond – 1 day (March)
Bream Creek – 3 days (April)
Huonville – 5 to 10 days (April, May)
D’Entrecasteaux Channel – 2-5 days (April, May)
Essentials:
Have your own transport
Have your own accommodation/housing – there are backpacker hostels and camping opportunities near the vineyards
Mandatory:
High visibility top / shirt / vest
Appropriate footwear for farm work e.g. covered boots
Gloves – not essential – but add some protection from cutting yourself or keeping hands clean from sticky grape juice – nitrile single use gloves or “invisigrip” gloves are best
Eye Protection – sunglasses can be a good idea to protect eyes from protruding canes
Picking snips – these will be provided
Salary:
Wine Industry Award – Casual Hourly Rate – $29.74 + Superannuation – Paid Weekly
Start time varies from 6:30am to 8:00am
Finish time varies from 4pm to 5pm
Most days would be 8 hours work *depends on how much grapes needs to be picked each day*
Backpackers: 88 days ✅ Visa must be legal to work in Australia
Work Ethic:
Pickers are expected to perform professionally but you are allowed to have fun!
If you are on a “working holiday visa” – Picking grapes is the “working” part of the working holiday visa not the “holiday” part. The holiday part is when you are NOT working/picking grapes.
The most sought after qualities in pickers is a good level of physical fitness and mental motivation to pick to best of your ability. Speed and efficiency is key.
