Disability Support Worker - Casual - Melbourne Cbd

Coughlin Disability Services Melbourne, Melbourne

Job Description

We are a couple, in our 20s (her) and 30s (him), who both have disabilities, living in Melbourne CBD. We are looking for a disability support worker to join our care team.

About Us

We live together in an apartment in Melbourne CBD, with our labrador service dog. We like to spend our days thinking, writing, learning, reading, coding, talking, advocating, and dog training. But we both have disabilities that mean, to do that, we need help to get in and out of bed every day, shower, toilet, dress, and do other ‘activities of daily living’. We both use power wheelchairs throughout the day, and have a variety of other disability equipment we use, including a ceiling hoist, commode chairs, etc. The dog assists with us with various tasks too.

One of us is on the autism spectrum; the other one is a tad anxious. We insist on a fair degree of choice and control over how and when people support happens, and by whom. We negotiate and collaborate with support workers. We like the social model of disability.

About CPSN Innovative Choices

To allow us to recruit, train, and manage our own team of support workers, we have joined the Cerebral Palsy Support Network’s (CPSN) Innovative Choices program (see cpsn.org.au/cpic/). CPSN take care of the paperwork, pay-roll, insurance, and other administrative necessities; we work with you directly on the rest. CPSN act as your legal employer; we act as both your clients and your ‘manager’
