Labourer Jobs in Sydney
A position that is always in demand, open to anyone, and can, in certain cases, count as the specified work needed for a backpacker extend their working holiday visa. Labouring is one of Australia's most popular backpacker gigs for a reason.
But what does it mean for backpackers to be a labourer as a 417 or 462 working holiday visa holder? Let's take a closer look.
What does a labourer actually do?
As discussed on our Labourer Jobs page, there are two main types of labourer: skilled and unskilled.
Skilled labourers (also called tradespeople) are trained in a specific discipline. Carpenters, plumbers, welders, plasterers, painters and electricians are all skilled labourers.
Unskilled labourers (also called general labourers) aren't trained in a specific discipline, and are often employed as skilled labourers' assistants. As an unskilled labourer you might be asked to fetch tools, move or unload material, clear debris, and do other simple tasks around a site or workplace.
What labourer jobs are available in Sydney?
Labourers are employed by a variety of organisations in a variety of industries. The most common labourer jobs in Sydney include:
- Construction labourer
- Warehouse labourer
- Road worker
- Council worker
Where can I find labourer jobs in Sydney?
Labourer jobs can be found across the city of Sydney. They are more concentrated in some areas than they are in others, however.
- The CBD: As the most property-dense part of Sydney, the city centre always has an array of construction, renovation and restoration projects in progress, all of which require unskilled labourers to help get the job done.
- Southwest Sydney: Nowhere in Australia is receiving the degree of investment that southwest Sydney is at the moment. Construction projects include a new airport, an economic hub and aerotropolis, Moorebank Intermodal, an extension of the Sydney Metro, and a whole heap of new suburbs. Labourers are understandably in high demand.
How much does a labourer earn in Sydney?
Australia's world-leading minimum wage will guarantee that you are paid at least $20 per hour, but working in certain positions or for certain organisations might see you getting paid more.

Should I get a labourer job in Sydney?
How does labouring compare to other common backpacker jobs in Sydney? Is it the right choice for you? To help you decide, consider the following:
- You need to be relatively fit: Labourers will often be on their feet in the heat for eight hours, and may be asked to lift tools, equipment or material weighing up to 25kg. It can be physically taxing work.
- The paycheque is limited, but regular: In 'piece work', like fruit picking or door to door sales, there's a higher limit on how much you earn, but you can also earn well below the minimum wage if you don't do well. A labourer's pay is limited, but regular.
- City work isn't specified work: No work in Sydney - labouring or otherwise - counts as ‘specified' for 417 and 462 working holiday visa holders, meaning it won't help you to secure a second or third year visa.
